WE WANT TO PUT SAIU IN THE GLOBAL MAP: K. V. RAMANI “Our vision is to be a global university from India; we do not want to be yet another Indian university,” said SaiU’s Chancellor K. V. Ramani, in an interview to BLoC, Business Line on Campus. Mr. Ramani said that Sai University (SaiU), established in Chennai is all set to start its academic programs in August 2021. While Sai will add to the list of the many private universities in India, the Founder-Chancellor said that SaiU will be in the global map, due to its unique offerings. In the interview, Mr. Ramani also talks about roping in consultant KPMG to research into the scope, student ratios and also provide a 15-year road map for the project. Interdisciplinary and flexible learning will be at the core of SaiU’s academic philosophy, says Dr. Jamshed Bharucha, Founding Vice Chancellor, in the interview. Talking about SaiU’s UG programs, Dr. Bharucha sheds light on the ‘design your own major’ option, within liberal arts, sciences, law, commerce and management and engineering disciplines. “Interdisciplinary education has proven to catalyze innovation whilst opening up a plethora of avenues for the students to explore,” says Dr. Bharucha.
Dr Sindhuja Sankaran’s paper titled “When do they push the right buttons? Need for closure and the role of perceived control in situations of uncertainty” Dr Sindhuja Sankaran, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Sai University, has published a paper titled “When do they push the right buttons? Need for closure and the role of perceived control in situations of uncertainty” in the journal ‘Personality and Individual Differences’. The paper was co-authored with Małgorzata Kossowska from Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland and Ulrich von Hecker from Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK. You can read the paper at: t.ly/f42In The paper highlights the human tendency to seek closure when faced with uncertainty, a state that can be uncomfortable for many individuals. According to their research, they argue that some people are sensitive to uncertainty, i.e., they are not capable of handling uncertainty, leading to distress. While some other people are effective at handling uncertainty. This motivational personality difference is called need for Cognitive Closure (NFC). They were interested in understanding the strategies that people with high NFC would use to handle uncertainty. They found that when people experience uncertainty, they also experience a lack of control over their environment. So, by restoring control, people could restore uncertainty. They found evidence to support this assumption and found that people with high NFC were more effortful in trying to restore control. While this paper underscored the general processes involved in dealing with uncertainty, one take-home message would be that, when dealing with uncertainty, trying to focus on things that give you a sense of certainty would help restore control and thereby deal with uncertainty better.

ARE OPEN BOOK EXAMS THE WAY FORWARD? With secondary and higher education institutions knee-deep in ‘blended learning’ for over a year, Sayyantana Dutta who manages Academic Affairs at the Daksha Fellowship and Sai University, writes about the way forward for higher education systems in the pandemic era. Published in The Bastion , an independent digital magazine, the article sheds light on blended learning, its impact on India and whether Indian educators are equipped to deal with it. Mr. Dutta also talks about the Open Book exam conundrum, and its implications in the education system. “The UGC Note on Blended Learning is an important step in the direction of facing the realities and needs of our current higher education system. While significant steps are being taken to ensure the dissemination of knowledge is not disrupted, creation and evaluation are definitely suffering, primarily due to oversight,” writes Mr. Dutta who is interested in Education Models, Curriculum Design and Media Literacy.
SAIU WILL BE A GLOBAL UNIVERSITY, SAYS K. V. RAMANI Sai University will be the first to provide a global education ecosystem in India, said K.V Ramani , Founder and Chancellor of SaiU, in an invigorating interview to The Hindu. In the interview, he talks about the array of scholars and faculty members at SaiU, the 106-acre net-zero campus, the futuristic UG and PG programs and much more. Mr. Ramani said he conceived of the university when he found that no education institute figured among the top 200 global institutions. The university’s governing council includes many Padma awardees. Mr. Ramani also said that, to begin with, around 250 to 300 students will be admitted in three undergraduate programs in liberal arts, science and technology, and one postgraduate program in law.The university will later on offer engineering, technology, management and eventually medicine courses. “The fee structure would be a fourth or a fifth of what students spend on going for an undergraduate education abroad,” Mr. Ramani said in the interview. Mr. Ramani further stated in the interview that the concept of a global university is doable, pointing to the growth of software services and the private healthcare sector, both of which had developed in the past 30 years. “In the IT sector we created an industry from zero. Today, when we go to fund a software company [in Western countries] they first ask us what is your India plan? If you don’t have an India plan you get a tie-up done and then come to us,” he remarked to The Hindu. Similarly, 35 years ago Indians went abroad for a bypass surgery. Today, India is sought by foreigners for healthcare. “We want to repeat the same magic in the education sector,” he said.
